Hi, I'm May

I design at the intersection of physical and digital experience — but I didn't start here.

I spent years in architecture and interior design. I loved the discipline — the spatial reasoning, the constraints, the way a well-designed space could change how someone felt without them knowing why. But architecture moves slowly, and I wanted to be closer to the human being at the center of the work. So I made a decision that felt equal parts terrifying and obvious: I taught myself product design.

What I brought with me was everything architecture gave me — systems thinking, spatial intuition, the ability to hold complexity and simplicity in tension. What I discovered was that designing for a screen and designing for a room are the same discipline at their core. You're always asking: how does a person move through this? What do they feel? What do they need that they haven't asked for yet.

That question drives everything I make.

I've spent the last five years designing at the edges — a wearable sleeve that reads an athlete's body and tells them when they're about to get hurt, a site that helps millions of people make one of their most confusing consumer decisions, an AI platform that changes how creators find music. I'm drawn to the hard problems. The ones where the technology is interesting but the human challenge is harder.

Outside of design I'm in the kitchen experimenting, on a trail somewhere on the west side of LA, or at the piano. I've been playing since I was six — classical training, then jazz, and somewhere along the way I stopped needing sheet music entirely. I can hear a song once and play it back. That instinct — listening closely enough to understand something and then making it your own — is the same one I bring to design.

I'm looking for work that lives at the edge — where hardware meets software, where the physical world and the digital one haven't fully figured out how to talk to each other yet.

That gap between physical and digital — I've been designing toward it my whole career.
